About Interface
Launched in 2002, INTERFACE began as a bold vision to create a platform for contemporary and alternative artistic expressions in a region where such opportunities were rare. It was Eastern India’s first international dance biennial and only the second of its kind in the country.
At a time when global festivals showcasing avant-garde artists and experimental work were virtually unheard of in India, INTERFACE played a pioneering role—not just in bringing world-class performances to Kolkata but in fostering a deeper understanding of contemporary art forms. Though it began in Kolkata, the festival subsequently expanded to other Indian cities like New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chandigarh and others.
Over the past two decades, INTERFACE has been more than just a festival; it has been a crucible for collaboration, innovation, and dialogue. This festival has introduced audiences to exceptional artists from across the globe, with a special focus on Asia, while building a sense of community among practitioners of contemporary dance and allied arts.
It has become a hub of creativity, where diverse forms of art intersect. In addition to its celebrated dance and theatre performances, the festival features a rich array of events—workshops, seminars, installations, film screenings, and free community events—inviting engagement from both artists and audiences. This multifaceted approach has made INTERFACE a vibrant ecosystem, one that supports collaboration, fosters experimentation, and nurtures the growth of contemporary practices.
As we celebrate the 10th edition after 22 remarkable years and 9 transformative editions, INTERFACE| Ed X offers us a moment of reflection—a chance to revisit our purpose and renew our commitment to exploring the evolving languages of contemporary expression. This milestone invites us to deepen our engagement with creativity and imagine new possibilities for convergence, where dance, theatre, music, cinema, installations, and other disciplines come together to forge something bold, something transformative.
INTERFACE remains not just a festival, but a movement—a space where diverse voices, forms, and ideas meet to create an extraordinary dialogue between tradition and innovation, the local and the global. It is this spirit of convergence that continues to shape its legacy and its future.
